Physicians consider the glutathione (GSH) family of antioxidant enzymes as quintessential to*:

Selenium is essential for humans. The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDAs) for selenium have been set by The National Research Council at 55 to 75 mcg per day for adults according to age and gender. Selenium's most important role appears to be for activating and maintaining healthy levels of cellular glutathione peroxidase function, one of the most important antioxidant enzymes of the body.* But it serves as a cofactor in approximately 10 selenoproteins, including those essential for proper thyroid function. Specifically selenium is now known to form the active center of two key thyroid hormone regulating enzymes called 1 and 3 iodothyronine deiodinases.*


Another area in which selenium serves vital roles is in enhancing the body's immune system.* Regions rich in soil selenium enjoy human populations with stronger immune systems. Such regions appear largely immune to many common afflictions plaguing civilization.*


In summary - A deficiency of Selenium has been linked to heart dysfunction, fatigue, infertility, high cholesterol, increased susceptibility to infection and growth impairment.*


Bioactive (organic) Selenium - Selenium may be bound to several bioactive ingredients to help its absorption as well as to help maximize its function over inorganic forms of selenium.* An inorganic form of selenium is sodium selenite. One bioactive form of selenium is selenium citrate.* Citrate comes from citric acid, a vital member of the cell's energy poduction system located in the mitochondria. Mitchondria therefore serve as the cell's engine room as briefly highlighted below.



Selenium is often indicated for:

  • Thyroid & Immune support - The thyroid gland has higher concentrations of selenium than any other organ in the body.  Selenium is vital to help make proper levels of differing thyroid hormones, which may enhance overall metabolism within every body cell.  Specifically, selenium enhances energy production in the mitochondria by helping to insure proper thyroid hormone levels as well as to quench destructive free radicals which abound in optimally functioning mitochondria - the body's main engine room.* Selenium therefore also influences fat metabolism by balancing thyroid hormone production.*  Without proper thyroid function, optimal immune function suffers. In this sense, selenium helps insure the enhancement of immune system function and to aid in antibody production.*
  • Antioxidant support & Inflammation control - Selenium helps quench excessive levels of hydrogren peroxide in healthy normal cells; to balance and regulate inflammation by its influence on proper production of prostaglandins, enzymes, and hormones and thereby strengthen immunity; to decrease platelet aggregation; and to detoxify unwanted substances. These structural and functional impacts of selenium may retard the aging process.*
  • Liver & Detoxification support - The liver requires optimal function of its antioxidant system and to control inflammation, both of which are tied hand and hand with the liver's own immune system performance (the Kupffer cell - macrophage system). Additionally, selenium helps detoxifiy heavy metals as well as fluoride poisoning.*
  • Cardiovascular health - Some heart and skin conditions are linked with low levels of selenium and glutathione peroxidase.* For example, selenium aids cardiovascular function and protects low density lipoproteins from becoming oxidized.* Also, proper heart vessel function depends upon elasticity of the vessels to better pump blood. Selenium helps maintain the elasticity of tissues.*
  • Joint comfort & Skin/Hair health - As just stated, joint health and function is partially maintained by adequate levels of selenium. This is also important to skin and hair growth. Furthermore, selenium helps to keep hair from going gray.*
  • Fertility - selenium fortifies prostate health, and is essential for the proper development of the baby after conception.*
  • Mood balance - Selenium is well-known to support proper mood balance, in part by galvininzing thyroid function.*


Dosage & Suggested Use:
For adults, bioactive selenium may be given in 200mcg amounts once or twice or more daily, according to the special needs of the patient.
