Several authors have reported conflicting studies regarding the health, vigor, physique and longevity of the peoples living in and around the Zamora Mountain region (which housed farmlands averaging elevations of ~4,350 ft) of southern Ecuador, especially the villages of Vilcabamba, San Pedro de la Bendita, Perlas Blancas, El Carmen, Santa Barbara, Palmyra (with its highly famed "El Dorado" valley), La Thoma, Nampacola, Colca, Mollepamba and Gonzanama.
